Why Did Disco Die?

I've been wondering for the past few months why it died...it's like it had this huge success but faded and didn't survive even on underground levels...I came across this post on a forum that explains what happened pretty well...original source is here...check it out

"The only music forms that were invented in and truly survived the 70’s are Punk and Rap and Metal. Although we could argue that Metal was a 60’s invention of garage rock bands like The Seeds and the early Psychadelic works of Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath... but I digress because what Im really interested in telling you is more about Punk and Rap and why it survived while Glam, Prog Rock, and Disco had ultimate failure in longtime interest and popularity...

No matter what you think about Rap and Punk per your musical tastes, the history of why it became made AND popular is why they have both remained popular artistic art forms. Dissent. Both styles carried messages of anarchy and overt distrust of Government structures. They were politically and racially charged and while early punk wanted to ruin the establishment by making music that was totally unmarketable, early rap was mainly playing with new techniques (like scratching) and finding a way to use African and Latin beats in an "American" way. Rap became a way for black musicians to express political issues, gain influence and expose social injustices that were happening in minority communities which were still being controlled and policed mainly by white people who didn’t live in the neighborhood.

Now, both music styles split into "popular" and "underground" types. Occasionally an underground style song (usually containing political messages and more hardcore beatmixing showing off scratch technique and amazingly complex music theory) would become popular,... but the Popular style usually stayed "safe"... using interesting but rather mundane beats and lyrics about love, girls, fun and daily life instead of the more interesting social problems that "underground" brought up.

When the popular style fades, the underground style will continue to pick up fans and keep fans, and eventually something will rise to popularity and keep the style alive and in the public eye.

THIS is why they both still exist and Disco died."

No offense to your or I think disco still exists - it's just called house. Due to it's wild popularity & subsequent backlash, it returned to it's underground roots & still surviving. And in 30+ years the name, like the music, evolved. It's was eventually rebranded house after the name of a gay disco.
